In March, the motorcycle industry witnessed significant year-on-year and month-on-month growth in both production and sales, while foreign trade exports maintained a rapid pace of expansion. Cumulative data for the first quarter indicates that, driven by robust demand in export markets, the industry's production and sales have steadily risen, and the sector as a whole continues to demonstrate a trajectory of steady development.


Production and Sales Status

In March, the industry as a whole produced 1.7321 million fuel-powered motorcycles and sold 1.6561 million units; production and sales volumes increased by 58.91% and 35.63% month-on-month, and by 7.81% and 4.96% year-on-year, respectively. According to incomplete statistics from the Chamber of Commerce, 371,200 electric motorcycles were produced and 378,000 were sold; production and sales volumes rose by 234.55% and 214.23% month-on-month, while production declined by 1.14% year-on-year and sales grew by 3.51% year-on-year. In March, total motorcycle production and sales reached 2.1033 million and 2.0341 million units, representing month-on-month increases of 75.13% and 51.65%, and year-on-year increases of 6.12% and 4.69%. Domestic sales of motorcycles totaled 850,800 units, up 126.17% month-on-month and 0.67% year-on-year; domestic sales of fuel-powered motorcycles amounted to 479,100 units, an increase of 80.94% month-on-month but a decrease of 0.85% year-on-year. Specifically, production and sales of two-wheeled motorcycles reached 1.832 million and 1.771 million units, rising by 71.06% and 47.18% month-on-month, and by 6.94% and 5.91% year-on-year, respectively. Production and sales of motorcycles with an engine displacement exceeding 250cc (excluding 250cc) totaled 78,500 and 77,700 units, up 100.77% and 69.28% month-on-month, but down 11.2% and 11.8% year-on-year. Production and sales of three-wheeled motorcycles stood at 271,300 and 263,100 units; production and sales volumes increased by 108.64% and 90.65% month-on-month, while production grew by 0.89% year-on-year and sales declined by 2.83% year-on-year. From January to March, the industry as a whole produced and sold 4.5241 million and 4.6035 million fuel-powered motorcycles, representing year-on-year increases of 11.35% and 12.37%, respectively; meanwhile, the production and sales of electric motorcycles totaled 799,800 and 791,400 units, marking year-on-year declines of 5.79% and 5.68%. During this period, total motorcycle production and sales reached 5.324 million and 5.3949 million units, with production and sales volumes growing by 8.39% and 9.3% year-on-year; domestic sales of fuel-powered motorcycles amounted to 1.1535 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 2.14%. Specifically, the production and sales of two-wheeled motorcycles stood at 4.7001 million and 4.7743 million units, representing year-on-year growth of 9.49% and 10.7%; within this category, the production and sales of motorcycles with an engine displacement exceeding 250cc (excluding 250cc) totaled 183,200 and 187,400 units, down 11.84% and 8.5% year-on-year. The production and sales of three-wheeled motorcycles reached 623,800 and 620,500 units, with production volume increasing by 0.77% year-on-year and sales volume declining by 0.42%.

In March, a breakdown by model type reveals that among the three major categories, standard motorcycles saw production and sales figures of 1.0557 million and 1.0078 million units, respectively—representing month-on-month increases of 52.24% and 28.14%, and year-on-year increases of 5.5% and 3.75%. Scooters recorded production and sales of 545,400 and 557,900 units; these figures mark month-on-month growth of 110.07% and 92.98%, and year-on-year growth of 2.49% and 7.2%. Underbone motorcycles posted production and sales of 224,000 and 200,700 units, reflecting month-on-month growth of 93.35% and 64.76%, and year-on-year growth of 24.27% and 11.3%.


For the period from January to March, standard motorcycles saw production and sales reach 2.7996 million and 2.8497 million units, up 9.57% and 11.52% year-on-year. Scooters recorded production and sales of 1.3339 million and 1.3509 million units, an increase of 4.64% and 5.58% year-on-year. Underbone motorcycles posted production and sales of 546,300 and 551,800 units, growing by 18.01% and 15.45% year-on-year. In terms of each model type's share of total two-wheeled vehicle sales, standard motorcycles, scooters, and underbone motorcycles accounted for 59.69%, 28.29%, and 11.56% of the market, respectively.


From January to March, the production and sales of standard three-wheeled motorcycles reached 623,700 units and 620,500 units, respectively; production increased by 0.76% year-on-year, while sales declined by 0.42% year-on-year. Specifically, the production and sales of standard cargo three-wheelers stood at 499,500 units and 497,100 units, marking year-on-year declines of 2.07% and 3.04%, respectively; meanwhile, the production and sales of standard passenger three-wheelers reached 118,600 units and 117,600 units, representing year-on-year increases of 13.81% and 11.23%, respectively.

In March, motorcycle exports totaled 1.1833 million units, representing a month-on-month increase of 22.6% and a year-on-year increase of 7.79%; the export value reached US$791 million, up 17.96% month-on-month and 8.69% year-on-year. Specifically, exports of two-wheeled motorcycles amounted to 1.1256 million units—a month-on-month rise of 22.89% and a year-on-year rise of 8.3%—while exports of three-wheeled motorcycles totaled 57,600 units, up 17.2% month-on-month but down 1.41% year-on-year.


For the period from January to March, the total export value of products from motorcycle manufacturers reached US$2.906 billion, a year-on-year increase of 22.86%. Exports of complete vehicles totaled 3.4737 million units—up 18.66% year-on-year—with an export value of US$2.325 billion, an increase of 21.52% year-on-year. Exports of motorcycle engines amounted to 250,400 units—down 22.41% year-on-year—with an export value of US$54 million, a decrease of 12.98% year-on-year. Exports of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) totaled 129,200 units—up 31.45% year-on-year—with an export value of US$421 million, an increase of 48.21% year-on-year. The export value of motorcycle parts and components reached US$106 million, a year-on-year increase of 0.18%.

From January to March, the top six series in terms of export volume were the 125, 150, 110, 200, 50, and 250 series, with export figures of 1.156 million, 876,800, 538,400, 308,400, 76,700, and 122,000 units, respectively. Compared to the same period last year, the 125 series saw a year-on-year increase of 25.24%; the 150 series grew by 2.41%; the 110 series rose by 59.96%; the 200 series increased by 7.12%; the 50 series declined by 34.71%; and the 250 series expanded by 35.3%. During the January-to-March period, these six major series collectively accounted for 3.0783 million units exported, representing 93.08% of the total export volume for two-wheeled motorcycles. Exports of three-wheeled motorcycles totaled 166,500 units, marking a year-on-year increase of 13.87%.


Economic Performance Overview


In January and February, motorcycle manufacturing enterprises generated a total industrial output value of 21.469 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 13.02%; achieved an industrial sales output value of 21.999 billion yuan, up 13.11% year-on-year; and realized an industrial value-added of 4.327 billion yuan, an increase of 7.18% year-on-year.


During the same period, motorcycle manufacturers recorded operating revenue of 23.255 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 12.65%; generated total profits of 953 million yuan, up 6.36% year-on-year; and contributed a total of 1.554 billion yuan in taxes and profits, a year-on-year decline of 6.10%.


From January to February, operating costs for motorcycle manufacturers amounted to 19.831 billion yuan, up 12.40% year-on-year; taxes and surcharges totaled 204 million yuan, down 20.31% year-on-year; selling expenses were 525 million yuan, up 3.12% year-on-year; administrative expenses were 908 million yuan, up 11.96% year-on-year; R&D expenses were 660 million yuan, down 0.84% year-on-year; and financial expenses were 375 million yuan, a significant year-on-year increase of 3,823.12%. The aggregate of these four categories of expenses totaled 2.468 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 23.70%.
